“After six years of absence and many individual projects, the duo is at last together again to fan the flame that once characterized them. And what better to seal this union than a new album? Second Time Around, the fourth of Young/Donato, gives us the impression that this is only a beginning...” —Claude Côté, Voir
“...a long awaited album that expresses all the joy of their reunion. This record brings together an original choice of standards. Shades of Karen Young? The concept of the duo, the unique phrasing, the flights of fancy.... Long live this magnificent duo!” —Alain Brunet, La Presse
Michel Donato and I played together as a bass /voice duo for the whole of the 80’s. We had a lot of fun together. It was a no stress, do what you feel like situation. We would rehearse new songs in the car on the way to the gigs and try them out that night, laughing about the train wrecks. But when there are only two instruments, it’s easy to land on your feet. We both felt liberated by the trust we had in the musicality and intuition of the other. All in all we had a great time and even made money!
In the new decade we made the last of our three records for Justin Time and went our own way. Unfortunately those records aren’t for sale anymore. The second, Contradanse even won a Felix Award for best jazz album in 88. In ’96 I had my own small record label and I thought what a shame it was to have no trace of Young and Donato anymore. So we asked Michel if he would like to do a record of standards, a jam in the studio. He was happy to do it and that’s how we have Second time around!
